Xerox, Lexmark Debut Dueling Printers For SMBs
Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Jul 13, 2009, 06:05 PM ET
Lexmark announces the "world's first" Web-connected touch screen all-in-one printers, while the Xerox WorkCentre 5230 brings high-end enterprise functions to smaller businesses.
Lexmark's eight new all-in-one inkjets are designed for small and midsize companies, with 4.3-inch touch-screens and 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity. Features include the ability to scan and print both sides of an ID card on a single sheet of paper (perfect for healthcare applications), RSS feeds (not sure what you'd use those for, Technologizer says you can't directly print Web content), business card scanning direct to your address book application, and Eco Mode that automates 2-sided printing.
The new Lexmark devices, priced from $199 to $399, will be available in September.
Over at Xerox, meanwhile, the focus is very different. The WorkCentre 5230 black-and-white multifunction printer (MFP) prints and copies up to 30 pages per minute, holds up 5,100 sheets, and can perform color scans directly to your computer or e-mail account.
Other enterprise-level features include Job Flow Sheets that automatically route documents to a predefined file; security features like network authentication, hard disk overwrite, and full system Common Criteria Certification; Auditron and Xerox Standard Accounting to track usage and help control costs; and Xerox's Extensible Interface Platform® (EIP) to let developers customize the user screen.
Available this month, prices for the WorkCentre 5230 begin at $7,999.
