SBR Quickie: Small-Biz Owner Shows Compassion To Robber

Here's a great story about a sympathetic small-business owner who took pity on a wannabe-robber.

PhotobucketMohammad "Mo" Sohail, who operates a convenience store in Shirley, N.Y. (on Long Island's eastern half), is being hailed by his customers as a man of compassion. When a bat-wielding, masked robber demanded money from him earlier this week, Sohail one-upped him in the weapons department and pulled out a gun. That's when the robber (pictured, right) fell to his hands and knees and apologized. "He said he had no money, no job, my family is hungry. I'm sorry," Sohail told News 12 in a video accompanying Newsday's story.

Sohail gave the robber $40 and a loaf of bread. They even shook hands and prayed together. The robber took off when Sohail went to retrieve him a carton of milk.

Sohail says his own financial woes -- he has five open tax warrants totaling $137,331.28 issued by New York's Department of Taxation and Finance for sales tax -- prompted him to have sympathy for the robber. Sohail doesn't plan to press charges ... and says he's working on paying down his own debts.
