Small Business (Down) Town Hall

Posted by Gayle Kesten Thursday, Mar 5, 2009, 06:09 PM ET

Small-business owners who haven't connected the dots between President Obama's stimulus package and what it means for them have a temporary excuse for remaining in the dark: technology.

That's because the system powering today's virtual Small Business Town Hall, hosted by Intuit, encountered technical difficulties and went down. Patient viewers stood by, taking advantage of both the system's chat feature and the #sbth page set up on Twitter to make sure the Webcast was down for everyone and not just their machines. (Lucky me, I had a third back-up. Thanks to bMighty's Jennifer Moline for the triple-check.)

So what exactly happened? According to a tweet from Small Business Trends' Anita Campbell, who was to take part in a panel discussion during the event, a "HUGE demand of 1000 connections brought system down." Turns out that's more than three times the number of participants who were expected to attend, she wrote later in her blog.

The conclusion everyone seems to be drawing: A huge number of small businesses really do want to wipe the glaze from their eyes and wrap their brains around the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The Town Hall will be rescheduled; I'll let you know as soon as I find out. In the meantime, score one for Twitter. Now's the time to begin learning how to make the social network work for you. (Need a place to start? Try these 10 Twitter users, who are all about small biz.)

As for the Webcast system, I have full confidence that the technology will rebound much quicker than the economy.
