Wednesday's Woman: Contest For Moms In Business

Posted by Gayle Kesten Wednesday, Feb 11, 2009, 01:06 PM ET

I joined the ranks of working mothers nearly a decade ago. My early memories are of perpetually rushing from home to daycare to work for a midsize media company, and then reversing course come 5:30 p.m. Yet, despite the many responsibilities, one of the few hats I didn't wear was that of a business owner.

And that's exactly who StartupNation, in conjunction with Ladies Who Launch, wants to recognize with its first annual Leading Moms in Business competition. The point of the contest is to celebrate, and rank, "America's top 200 mom-owned business and the women behind them." We, the people, are the ones who vote for the companies we deem "best of the best" for the list, so if you're looking for a good reason to engage your customers, then "a please vote for me" message will work wonders.

What's in it for you should you make the cut? Try some priceless free publicity: "We know that awareness and driving traffic to your business is one of the biggest challenges for any business owner. Winners of the Leading Moms in Business Ranking will be part of a very high profile list that will be published and promoted widely in traditional media such as national and local TV, radio, in newspapers and magazines, and on some of the largest, most influential websites on the web, MSN and StartupNation among them."

You have until March 31, 2009, to register your business, which is a straightforward and simple process. (The only painful part may be entering your birth year.) Of note, applicants MUST have a Web site. Click here to view and vote for the 200+ mom-owned businesses that have already thrown their hats into the ring.

Winners will be announced in early May.
