New iPhone App Gives Excel A Mobile Boost
iPhone users now have the ability to access and edit their Microsoft Excel files while on the go, courtesy of Quickoffice.
MobileFiles Pro provides "editable Office functionality for the iPhone and iPod Touch," according to a statement from the company. "The latest upgrade brings comprehensive editing and saving of Microsoft Office Excel files in the .xls format, Wi-Fi file transfer to and from a desktop (Mac and PC), and the ability to access and synchronize with Apple MobileMe accounts."
MobileFiles Pro provides support for MobileMe, more than 125 Excel functions, and a variety of common file formats, including images, media files, Microsoft Office, iWork, and PDFs. File transfers are secured via passcode protection, according to the company.
QuickOffice says it will continue to push out editing for other file formats, such as Microsoft Word, in future releases, reports Webware.com blogger Josh Lowensohn.
MobileFiles Pro costs a penny shy of $10 and is available via the App Store.
Separately, a company named Soonr has released a free iPhone app that lets users access, share, and print their documents -- Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, among others -- from a "personal cloud," (PDF), which contains backed up files of what resides on users' computers. The nice part here is backing-up part of the process is automated, so file versions are the very latest without your intervention.
One more quick note for those of you contemplating an iPhone purchase but haven't pulled the trigger: Best Buy is selling used iPhones (those returned within 30 days of purchase) for $50 less than a new one. That discount applies to both the 8-GB ($149 vs. $199) and 16-GB ($249 vs. $299) models.
