Flat Is The New Up

Posted by Fredric Paul Wednesday, Jul 2, 2008, 01:52 PM ET

Small business employment growth is slowing, but at least small businesses aren't actually shedding jobs.

June ADP National Employment Report and ADP Small Business Report, companies with fewer than 50 workers added 7,000 jobs last month. That may sound good, but it's the smallest gain in nearly six years.

And all of the gains came in the service sector, which added 34,000 small business positions. Manufactuing, meanwhile, lost 27,000 small business jobs.

Doesn't as good anymore, does it?

On the other hand, when you compare it to the overall economy, small businesses are still the stars. Medsize companies lost 35,000 jobs in June, and big companies -- those with at least 500 employees -- shed 51,000 positions.

So while it's clear that times are tough, small businesses seem to be doing a better job of coping than their larger competitors. Let's all try to keep that in mind.
