In Praise of Mozilla's New Firefox 3 Browser

Mozilla's Firefox 3 browser has entered the building. Could a place in the Guinness World Records book be next?

As reported last week on SBR sister site bMighty.com, the next-gen browser follows 34 months of development and three release candidates. Its promises: to be faster, more stable and secure, and easier to use than its open-source predecessor.

According to bMighty publisher/editor-in-chief Fred Paul, the browser holds true to its word: "I can't put it any more simply than this: As of today's release of Firefox 3, you should make it your primary Web browser. Really, I'm serious. Download it now and improve your Web work. It's free, it's easy, and it will make your online life better in so many ways."

What's to love about Firefox 3? First and foremost, its speed completely impressed Fred, who says that feature alone is enough reason to download the browser. Some other "cool stuff" from Mozilla's 15,000-plus tech enhancements that Fred singles out: a smarter address bar that makes adding bookmarks and RSS feeds easier than easy; a new download manager that keeps better track of your files; and better security warnings, including built-in phishing protection.

The folks over at TG Daily also recommend Firefox 3 for 10 reasons including improved memory handling that resolves FF2's memory leak issues, and a more powerful add-ons manager that lets users install new functionality with ease. In addition, ChannelWeb's Test Center gives Firefox 3 a favorable review, though "whether it can reduce IE to ashes, remains to be seen."

Finally, with Firefox 3 -- and some clever marketing -- Mozilla is pushing to set a world record for the most software downloads in a 24-hour period. Its pitch: "All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours -- it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome."
