Skype Intros Inexpensive Plans For Calling Abroad

Posted by Gayle Kesten Tuesday, Apr 22, 2008, 08:04 AM ET

Talk is now cheaper, particularly when you need to make an international call.

On Monday, eBay-owned Skype, of free-Internet-calls-via-the-magic-of-VoIP fame, came out with three unlimited flat-fee plans for calls made to landlines in 34 countries. Unlike Skype's free service, in which both parties have to be Skype customers, the new offerings "give people an easy, hassle-free choice for how and when they want to catch up with their loved ones," said Stefan Oberg, who oversees Skype's telecom products, in a statement.

Who's to say you can't love your customers?

The three calling plans are:

  • Unlimited US & Canada: Calls to landlines and cell phones in the U.S. and Canada for $2.95/month.
  • Unlimited Mexico: Calls to landlines in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey for $5.95/month. (Discounted rates apply to the rest of the country.)
  • Unlimited World: Calls to landlines in 34 countries, including Chile, China, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, for $9.95/month.

None of the subscriptions requires a long-term contract. To sweeten the deal, Skype is offering a 33 percent discount if you sign up for a three-month or 12-month plan by June 1.
