HP Launches Marketing Contest for Small Businesses

The following definition of "brand" comes straight out of Wikipedia.

Brands were originally developed as labels of ownership: name, term, design, symbol. However, today it is what they do for people that matters much more, how they reflect and engage them, how they define their aspiration and enable them to do more. Powerful brands can drive success in competitive and financial markets, and indeed become the organization’s most valuable assets.

That's what I call a tall order.

HP wants to help. This week the Palo Alto, Calif.-based technology giant launched a contest that will award one small U.S. business (99 employees or less) with the chance to work with professional graphic designers to build a brand. Each entrant has to submit a short essay and photos describing his business, marketing and branding challenges, and why he would benefit from help with refreshing or creating his business’ brand image.

Three judges are already in place who will review the entries based on such factors as overall composition, adherence to topic and creativity.

Applications are being accepted online through Thursday, Feb. 28.
