Home Networks Need Disaster Recovery Too

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Jan 14, 2008, 10:16 PM ET

If you run a really small business out of your home office, you may think you don't need to worry about disaster recovery. Think again.

Fortunately, disaster recovery planning is not that difficult to do for a home network. Payton Byrd at IT Toolbox offers a couple of different scenarios on how to make it work.

Byrd offers strategies for small data collections, multimedia files and even "bare metal recovery." His advice "is to use the most robust backup solution you can afford."

That's a great idea, but my advice -- based on the certain fact that many small offices don't do anything about backing up any of their data, is exactly the opposite: Do the simplest, cheapest, easiest, easiest to remember, most trouble-free backups you can. Maybe that way you'll actually do them.
