This Thank God It's Friday morning brings news of data lost on 650,000 J.C. Penney and other major retail customers.
As reported on bMighty.com, a missing computer tape includes the Social Security numbers of about 150,000 people. GE Money, which handles credit-card operations for J.C. Penney, has been notifying consumers and referring them to a call center set up to deal with the breach.
This latest breach underscores why it's so important for self-employed individuals to apply for a federal tax ID number and not give out their social-security numbers when conducting business. You can apply online, or by phone, fax or mail. Click here to learn more.
Interestingly, nowhere on J.C. Penney's site could I find corporate notifying customers of what's going on.
