Vista, Only Lighter

Posted by Gayle Kesten Monday, Jan 28, 2008, 03:05 PM ET

A software tool that cuts in half the footprint of Microsoft’s Windows Vista operating system could help loosen up some much-needed space on your PC.

VLite, designed by Dino Nuhagic, lets you remove unwanted components from your OS before installing it -- components like Windows Media Player, Windows Photo Viewer, MSN Installer, Wallpapers, SlideShow, Windows Mail.

So just how much space does Vista take up? I’m as conceptually challenged as the next girl, but this comparison has me rethinking what inhabits my own laptop: Vista requires much as 15 GB of disk space while XP needs 1.5 GB. (Of course, you could always switch back to XP altogether, but I covered that last week.)

Back to vLite, which, according to Nuhagic, addresses more than just hard-disk space. "There is also an increase in OS responsiveness, and you don't have to tolerate all kinds of things you don't use," Nuhagic told InformationWeek.

The only catch is once you get rid of a component, it’s gone for good.

If staying trim were only that easy for humans.
