You Gotta Give to Get
Taco Bell is giving away free tacos if a player steals a base in the World Series. What are you doing?
"Millions and millions of people will be watching the Series and hopefully tuning in to see when they are going to get their taco," said Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch.
Most small business owners don't have the resources to run this kind of promotion but, nevertheless, they can take a page from the huge restaurant chain's book. Look for an opportunity to promote your small business. The World Series is probably out of your league but your local little league isn't. How about a bunch of mini promotions or even taking an opportunity to give a customer a free gift?
The manager of a small florist shop gave Wall Street Journal blogger Wendy Bounds a free pumpkin and she has been singing his -- and the store's -- praises, not to mention knocking the fact that the florist's much larger competitors don't do that.
She writes:
"But by insisting I take something gratis, the manager banked a lot more — goodwill. What he did is a version of sampling and it’s something new small businesses should do more of. If people don’t know how good you are, give them a sample of your product or service so they can find out. Plus, it makes you memorable; Home Depot and Wal-Mart are not in the habit of giving things away."
Throw a promotion, give away samples, get customers to know what you do. Don't worry -- you'll get it all back, and more.
