Putting 802.11n Routers to the Test

Posted by Cora Nucci Wednesday, Oct 24, 2007, 01:54 PM ET

Should you kick your 802.11g router to the curb and replace it with one of those fancy new 802.11n devices everybody's talking about?

InformationWeek has reviewed six 802.11n routers (also known as N routers) from Apple, Belkin, Buffalo Wireless, D-Link, Linksys, and Netgear.

Highlights:

  • Apple's Airport Extreme Base Station "performs nominally better than a well-equipped G router."

  • "The Buffalo G300N is a fantastic router that performs better than any other N router I tested."

  • The Linksys Wireless-N Gigabit Router (WRT350N) exhibited "significant performance issues and a difficult customization utility."

Tests were done in the reviewer's home rather than a business setting, but the results can be reasonably extrapolated to the realities of a small business environment.

See all the tested routers in this image gallery.
