Is Your IT Spend Aligned With Growth Expectations?

Posted by Judy Mottl Wednesday, Oct 31, 2007, 09:24 AM ET

Nearly 45% percent of small SMBs expect business to grow more than 10 percent over the next 12 months, and 21% expect more—like a 20% growth spike.

That growth will be spurred by tech investment: 29% spending secured data backup, storage and disaster recovery; 24% spending on IP telephony; 19% buying server virtualization and consolidation; 18% going Wi-Fi and 13% laying down storage area networks.

Experts say it’s a big business shift: "Historically, SMBs tended to replace technology reactively when something went wrong. Now, they are proactively looking for solutions that enable them to leverage their networks and boost productivity and efficiency," reports the Computing Technology Industry Association, which commissioned the study.

Growth will spur hiring as well: Nine out of 10 SMBs plan to add new full-time employees in the next 12 months; and 33% plan to add at least one new business location.
