VoIP's Biggest Liability

Posted by Judy Mottl Tuesday, Sep 11, 2007, 07:04 AM ET

IDG News is reporting that Voice over Internet Protocol's biggest weakness--security--is still a major issue with the arrival of a new worm that creeps its way through VoIP's P2P chat feature.

So if you've got VoIP up and running you need to let users know, once again, not to click on any unknown links in an instant message.

As usual the malcontents behind the worm are getting more sophisticated than ever by pushing out several "cleverly written" chat messages aimed at tricking users to click on a jpg file.

If they do click on the link the malware accesses the PC through the VoIP's API and issues the same dangerous message to those on the user's chat list.

Security vendors F-Secure Corp. and Kaspersky Lab Ltd. have been the first to update their tools to detect the worm.
