Software As A Service -- For Small Business, By Small Business
Two hot trends are coming together as Software As A Service (Saas) meets programs developed for small business by other small business. At least, that's the premise of a story in today's Small Business section of the New York Times.
Simple Software Solutions From Those Who’ve Been There (free registration required) is written by Heather Clancy, who used to be editor of CRN, which like SmallBizResource.com is owned by CMP Technology.
Ms. Clancy cites NetBooks, which uses the internet to deliver software services covering sales and customer relationship management (CRM); inventory, production and shipping; and bookkeeping and financial reports for companies with fewer than 50 employees. The company is owned by Ridgely Evers, who also owns DaVero Sonoma vineyards and olive orchards but who is better known for developing the original QuickBooks for Intuit.
Her other examples of SaaS being created by small companies for other small companies include YourCostCenter.com which calculates construction job costs and ConnectWise's operations management software.
In addition to the technology trends at work, I think there's an even more general opportunity here. If your small business is doing something right, there may be an opportunity to create a new business helping other business do it right, too.
I'd love to hear about any other examples you know of where small businesses have done that.
