Social Networking Tips To Boost Business

There's a great article over at the New York Times that expounds on gaining the greatest value in using social networks (think Facebook and blogs) to get business, keep business and grow the business.

Yes, be prepared to allocate some time and resources to the effort. But the return could be completely unexpected.

While the Times article is definitely worth a read, here's a quick checklist on making social networking pay off for your small business:

Build an active and alluring Web presence--whether it's simply a blog about your company or a full-grown Web site.

Stay active from day one, talking and chatting and helping visitors. Promptly answer customer and client questions and don't ignore hot topics.

You know your business better than anyone so use that given authority to establish yourself and your company as an "authority" and feel free to touch on sensitive issues to spark interaction.

As one expert in the article notes:

A new business doesn’t have the money to build a brand and pay for advertising. The biggest investment is your time, and these tools require a lot of that, but they can really pay off.
