It's A Wiki Wiki World In Which We Live
Think "wiki" and you likely think it's a collaborative tool for large, global sprawling enterprises needing a collective place for thousands of employees to share and communicate.
Think again. The wiki, while not new or bleeding edge at this point, is still gathering steam as a company communications tool and it's one of the best tools around for the small business environment.
Why? Well for lots of reasons. Just think about your organization today and how it works. It's a tightly woven group of hard working people (hopefully, right?) who all talk and share and interact dozens of times during the day.
Everyone's connected yet, everyone's likely somehow tied to the latest business endeavor yet there's likely no one 'place' to gather, store and expand on the growing data pile of intelligence and new ideas that are very likely being shared in some way or another.
Since SMBs are 'small' and collaborative in nature wikis are a perfect, easy to use and, best of all, often free, technology that could prove invaluable in many ways.
As this in-depth overview about wikis at BusinessWeek illustrates, getting people to log in and share is the biggest hurdle in making wikis work to their full potential. Well in your organization that likely won't be an issue. Another challenge is managing the data--in companies with thousands of employees there is a need for someone to 'manage' the wiki. That likely won't be a big requirement for your enterprise.
In fact, the two big issues for a small company grabbing a wiki will likely be determining which software package to use and tracking all the good ideas and knowledge flowing in from employees who will likely embrace having a centralized place to share insight and innovative ideas. And heck, that second challenge is one any SMB would like welcome.
So come on, get wiki. And if you have gone wiki let us know how it's helped your business and hopefully expanded growth.
