Freelancers Are Small Businesses Too

Posted by Fredric Paul Monday, Sep 3, 2007, 06:09 PM ET

Freelancers are actually small businesses. It sounds obvious, but it's important to think of a freelance businessas a business -- fundamentally different from a professional working for a regular employer. Among other things, that means avoiding the most common freelancer mistakes.

Over at the Freelance Switch, Leo Babauta has put together an excellent list of The 10 Biggest Mistakes Freelancers Make, and How to Avoid Them (I love lists!).

Check out the post for the details, but these four business-related mistakes jumped out at me:

1. Charging too little
2. Choosing the wrong clients
3. Not having multiple income streams

None of these are everyday concerns for someone working at a regular job. But turn that job into a business and they can spell the difference between success and failure.

If you're a freelancer, you have to think of yourself as a business, or you won't succeed no matter how good you are at what you do.
