Danger: Hard Drive Crash Looming. Are You Ready?

Posted by Naomi Grossman Monday, Sep 17, 2007, 08:00 AM ET

Anyone who has experienced that heart-stopping, gut-wrenching moment when your cursor suddenly stops responding and then the reboot doesn't take knows that the crash of a computer's hard drive can happen anytime.

Once you've experienced that kind of (data) loss, your innocence is gone, but for many small business owners the experience doesn't translate into getting prepared in case it should happen again.

But it can.

My colleague, Cora Nucci, warned small business owners about the need to back up data regularly in the case of such an event but organizational blogger Lorie Marrero expands on this advice.

Marrero lost the hard drive on her six month old notebook suddenly and inexplicably, without any kind of warning. But she lists a number of things she did beforehand that saved the day when disaster struck. Among them are:

  1. She backed everything up.
  2. She still has her old, working laptop.
  3. She purchased a warranty on the hardware.
  4. She had all her passwords preserved in SplashID, which she had also backed up.

She also used the opportunity to downgrade from Vista to Windows XP, which pleased her to no end, but that's for another blog.
