VoIP Skews Small

Posted by Fredric Paul Wednesday, Aug 15, 2007, 07:40 PM ET

Historically, Voice over IP, or making telephone calls over the Internet has been dominated by large enterprises with custom systems or individual consumers user popular services like Skype. Smaller companies were largely left out.

But the Wall Street Journal reports that is starting to change.

According to the story by Bobby White, startups like M5 Networks, Fonality, and Digium are trying to make VoIP easier for small companies to use by using open source technology.

There's a long way to go, apparently. Only 11 million of the more than 47 million business VoIP lines are in small companies, but that's expected to grow to 46 million by 2010.

VoIP can still be difficult to manage, susceptible to hacking, and prone to slowdowns and quality issues, the story says. But the savings are so great that more and more small companies are willing to make the move.
